Are you ready for some intimate screen-ogling sessions? Possibly even lick your computer screen? Want some eye candy? Voila! I now present to you, Hey Cupcake!
I’ve been fortunate to stumble upon Judy’s blog which then led me to discover that she’s a cupcake baking machine! OMG~ Her cupcakes have such a darling visual appeal and they would be PERFECT for gorgeous weddings and parties! I wish I lived in California so I can get my hands on her baked goods. See below for a mini-interview with the owner of Hey Cupcake!
Oh! so mouth watering….
How in the WORLD did you get started on your cupcake baking frenzy? What inspired you?
I’ve always loved to cook, bake, make things with my hands, but that’s not how it all went down. About 4 years ago I started my first real job as a graphic designer. When I filled out my W4 form, I filled it out completely wrong! I had marked “exempt” for paying taxes and come tax season, I ended up owing the government some major money. So how does this even relate to how I started making cupcakes? During this time I remember hearing a lot of talk about Magnolia Bakery’s cupcakes. I wanted to see what the big deal was so I tried making their cupcakes. Making them was a success, but I thought they were way too sweet. So I went back into the kitchen and tried coming up with a frosting that worked for me. I made a white chocolate buttercream frosting and to this day, it is my best and most popular flavor yet! While I was stressing out about how the heck I was going to pay the money I owed in taxes (since junior graphic designers don’t make much), I thought, why not sell my cupcakes? I was working at a college campus and sold my first large order to the student association. They gave the cupcakes away for free during finals week and it made me so ecstatic to see everyone gobbling them up! I’m happy to say that I was able to pay my taxes and planted the seed to what would become Hey Cupcake!
How do you decide on the decor of your cute cupcakes?
I usually stick to floral designs, but I have customers who’ll want to customize their cupcakes and it’s always a welcoming challenge because it pushes me to be more creative. I try to keep the look simple and not overwhelming. Colors and patterns really inspire me-it’s the designer in me. I’m always on the lookout for great color combinations.
Do you ship out your cupcakes to other states? ahem…like Chicago?
Unfortunately I only do local deliveries (southern california) at this time. You’ll have to come out to California to taste these goodies!
It seems that cupcakes seems to be the crazy trend these days, how do you stay “in the game” with all these other shops around?
I’d like to say that I’m able to stay “in the game” because I make a truly good product. My cupcakes aren’t too sweet and they don’t make you feel all fatty afterwards. And it’s all about the frosting! Even my ex-roommate’s father who detests sweets loves my cupcakes! I saw him eat 3 of them in one afternoon! That makes me happy. haha.
Thank you Judy for the lovely interview! Your cupcakes truly are amazing – I’ll be visiting California soon!
